About Cuppa

Built by a sole trader, for sole traders.

Hi, I'm Josh. I've been freelancing in the UK for years, and for most of that time I've wanted one simple thing: an easy, affordable way to track my income and expenses myself, without handing hundreds of pounds a year to an accountant.

Cuppa started life as a Notion template I built for myself. A handful of databases, some formulas, and a quarterly routine of copying numbers into a spreadsheet before submitting to HMRC. It worked, but it was fragile. Every tax year I'd tweak the formulas, double-check the totals, and hope I hadn't missed anything.

When Making Tax Digital for Income Tax became mandatory, I realised the Notion setup wouldn't cut it anymore. HMRC now requires digital records with digital links, meaning your software has to submit directly on your behalf. No more copy-pasting into a form.

I looked at the existing options. Most were built for accountants, not the people actually doing the work. They were packed with features I didn't need, confusing to navigate, and expensive for what they offered. I just wanted to log what I earned, log what I spent, and submit my quarterly updates without fuss.

So I built Cuppa. It does exactly what that Notion template did, but properly: MTD-compliant, connected directly to HMRC, and designed around the way sole traders actually work. No double-entry bookkeeping, no chart of accounts, no jargon. Just income in, expenses out, and a clear view of where you stand.

If you're a UK sole trader who wants to stay on top of your finances without overcomplicating things, Cuppa was built for you.
